Dreaming Awake

"Life is a dream guided by the senses". -A documentary on dreams from http://documentaryheaven.com/category/psychology/page/3/

I was watching this documentary on dreams tonight. The quote here represents one of the viewpoints presented that our minds are always "dreaming", but while we are awake our dreams are guided by outside stimuli processed through the senses, and while we are asleep, the dreams are shaped by our internal beliefs and memories. Basically, everything that happens to you is in your head. It always seems so easy to influence stark realities when you realize they are just illusions of stark realities.

This got me to thinking: so, in a usual night dream, most people are rendered helpless in the dream sequence, subject to their rabid subconscious taking on its own world. However, there are some people who can teach themselves to lucid dream. I've read that the key to lucid dreaming is recognizing that you're dreaming. Once you're in a night dream and you register that you're dreaming, you can start to manipulate everything around you. Well then that got me thinking: if everything all the time is a dream just guided by various stimuli, then what happens if we start to recognize that in our waking life, everything is also just a dream? To what extent can we manipulate what we see?
